Phil Collins Started Winning His Genesis Audition From the Pool

While other drummers auditioned, Collins listened from the water and quietly learned every change before his turn arrived.

Phil Collins began passing his Genesis audition before he ever reached the drum kit. His unlikely advantage was a swimming pool close enough to the music for him to hear every candidate who played before him.

In 1970, Genesis advertised for a drummer who was sensitive to acoustic music. Collins arrived early at the home of singer Peter Gabriel's parents with guitarist Ronnie Caryl. The band was still working through other drummers, so Gabriel suggested that Collins take a swim while he waited.

Listening before playing

The pool was close enough for Collins to hear the audition pieces. As one candidate followed another, he listened to the arrangements and memorized their changes. By the time the band finally called him inside, the music was no longer unfamiliar.

It was not a trick that could replace ability. Collins still had to sit down and play the parts brilliantly. What the waiting period gave him was preparation: he knew where the transitions were and could focus on showing the musicianship that had brought him there.

That distinction matters. The pool did not create his talent. It gave him time to aim it perfectly.

The first of two unlikely promotions

Genesis officially made Collins its drummer in August 1970. He became essential not only for his playing but also for the vocal blend he created alongside Gabriel.

Five years later, after Gabriel left the band, Collins faced an even stranger transition. Genesis searched for a new lead singer before realizing that the voice it needed was already behind the drums.

The pool audition now feels like an early version of the story that would define Collins's career. He listened closely, understood what the band required, and was ready when the moment arrived.
